Will a change ever happen?

Today during class we had a short discussion about the poem "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou. This is a poem that represents empowerment and has been read since my school days.

While listening to the discussion I had a sudden thought regarding do we understand the poem. The poet wrote the poem expressing the pain, and suffering that she experienced but do we understand that pain?

The poem talks about liberation and women's empowerment but do we find an impact after reading the poem? This poem has been in the syllabus for years but do we find change in the grownups that already read through the poem? Does this poem bring the feeling of empowerment or does it just remain as a great work of the poet?

The issues that she highlights can still be seen in the society that we currently reside in and can be seen raw through the naked eye. The treatment of women as inferior, discrimination based on colour, and the idea of liberation all remain the same as it had been for ages.

Women are still treated as inferior without even trying to hide. Women still feel unsafe to return home at night after work or even leave their homes after dawn. Women still get harassed in public transport.

Dark-skinned people are still looked down upon. The media portrays it as inferior which is widely accepted and gives a wrong message to the younger generation. People still fight for "Black Lives Matter". Is there any empowerment we see in our daily life? Do we find change or will it always remain wishful thinking?
